Horus Ballistics Software & Kestrel Weather Tracker Are Now Together In One Unit
Horus Vision has teamed with Kestrel Weather Meters to introduce the Horus Kestrel, a compact ballistics instrument for long-range shooting.
San Bruno, CA –-(Ammoland.com)- Horus Vision, the leader of long-range shooting innovation, has teamed up with Kestrel Weather Meters to introduce the breakthrough Horus Kestrel- the first device to incorporate weather (atmospherics) data directly into ballistics solutions in real-time.
The relationship between Horus and Kestrel kindled as a response for the military’s mission to obtain consolidated gear to minimize redundancy and bulk. All the power of ATrag Ballistics is now integrated in the four-ounce pocket sized Kestrel Weather Tracker, eliminating the need for a separate piece of gear (which comes with a number of accessories you would have to lug around, as well).
This integrated Kestrel 4500NV unit features five customizable targets, an extensive gun list, and Horus’ proprietary truing technology. This pairing is only offered in the 4500 model as it is the only one that is capable of collecting wind direction – which is crucial for long-range shooting. The Night Vision (NV) series is the preferred model for the military because of its dim red back light that does not obscure or bleach out your natural vision in low light situations. The Horus Kestrel comes in two colors- Olive Drab and Desert Tan, and is IP67 and MIL-STD-810G Rugged. All compacted into a hand sized unit that takes two AAA batteries- no chargers, plugs, or over-sized energy sources.
Horus and Kestrel are prime candidates for this type of integration, because both are well-known and highly respected in the military and government communities. Both products have seen extensive action overseas and are relied upon in the daily lives of the sniper community.
The Horus Kestrel will be available early in 2011, following SHOT Show, and will be available to purchase on both Horus Vision and Kestrel websites. Preliminary suggested price is around $739, the Horus Kestrel is less than a PDA with ATrag and Kestrel Combo.
FAQs: Horus Kestrel
1. Why Horus ATrag Ballistics?
With all the different brands of ballistics software on the market, why would Horus Vision’s ATrag be the engine of choice to embed within a Kestrel?
One of the obvious reasons was because of the military contract Horus Vision was granted, outfitting the Army with ATrag as the exclusive ballistics software of choice. If ATrag was trusted for our troops in the field, then ATrag would be a good fit for Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters.
The biggest factor differentiating ATrag from other ballistics software is the truing capability, taking your factual data and modeling an accurate outcome of bullet drop, rather than a predictive one.
2. What is the benefit?
The two-in-one integration of the Horus Kestrel eliminates the need for a ruggedized PDA (which comes with a number of accessories you would have to lug around, as well) to calculate ballistics in long-range shooting. Since the ballistics software is embedded within the Kestrel unit, environmental data automatically inputs from the Kestrel side to the ATrag side for accurate and instant solutions. It is light-weight, compact, and all it takes to run are two AAA batteries- no chargers, plugs, or over-sized energy sources.
The Horus Kestrel includes all the essentials:
- Five customizable targets
- Extensive gun list
- IP67 waterproof
- MIL-STD-810G rugged
- Built-in digital compass
- Bluetooth data transfer capabilities
3. Which Kestrel meters will be available with Horus ATrag Ballistics software?
The Kestrel 4500NV series will be available with Horus Vision ballistics. The Kestrel 4500 is the only model to give wind direction, which is important for long-range shooting and a perfect complement to an integrated targeting solutions system. The Night Vision (NV) series is the preferred model for the military because of its dim red back light that does not obscure or bleach out your natural vision in low light situations. Nocturnal or early AM hunters like this one, too, for the same reason.
4. Does the Horus Kestrel have Bluetooth capabilities?
Yes. All Kestrels sold by Horus containing ATrag Ballistic software has Bluetooth technology with the capability to turn on and off, depending on personal preference.
5. What colors are available?
The Horus Kestrel is available in Olive Drab or Desert Tan.
6. How much do they cost?
The preliminary suggested price is around $739 and can be purchased on both Horus Vision and Kestrel websites. The price for the Horus Kestrel is less than a ruggedized PDA and Kestrel meter combo. The Horus Kestrel eliminates the need for a PDA, because all the critical data you need is now in one unit.

9. Can I upgrade my current unit to include Horus Vision software?
No. The Kestrel with Horus Vision ATrag software was specially designed and built to support the integrated ballistics solutions along with the Kestrel platform you’re used to- environmental data, storage and wireless data transfer capabilities. Sometimes we’re able to offer an upgrade option if it only involves a code change but in this case that is not possible. Kestrel does have a Customer Care Discount program where you may trade in your current Kestrel for credit towards the new Kestrel Weather Tracker with Horus Vision. The Kestrel you turn in will then be donated to AmericanSnipers.org.
