Will Gun Control Remain in ObamaCare?

U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)- The battle over the anti-gun ObamaCare law is raging.

Conservatives in the House's Freedom Caucus — in addition to conservatives in the Senate and on the outside — are now in open revolt against House Speaker Paul Ryan's “Son of ObamaCare” bill.

Add to this the concern from gun owners around the country.

Gun Owners of America opposed the original ObamaCare because it threatened gun owners' rights.

ObamaCare has given the federal government the ability to use (and abuse) medical data as a pretext for keeping law-abiding gun owners from possessing firearms — just as the feds have already done to more than 257,000 military veterans.

Unfortunately, Paul Ryan's “Son of ObamaCare” does not eliminate GOA's concerns.

The reasons why conservatives around the country are upset with the “Son of ObamaCare,” which is still unnumbered, are not hard to figure out:

  • The bill still requires an individual mandate. If your insurance lapses, the government requires that you pay a 30% legally-mandated penalty to re-enroll.
  • The bill keeps the subsidies. It's called an “advanceable refundable tax credit.”

And what that means is that people who pay no taxes get a big check from the government. How is that different from subsidies under ObamaCare Prime?

The bill keeps the entitlements. It continues to pay the 31 greedy states who grabbed for “free” Medicaid money, and it creates a NEW program to reward those who didn't.

We don't oppose repealing the ObamaCare tax increases. But, if that's the big benefit of this bill, the result will be that it rewards big business, but retains the problems for everyone else.

How did we get into this situation?

Well, our staff told Republican Congressmen that they needed to immediately REPEAL the anti-gun ObamaCare law — and then confront Democrats with either working with them to “replace” or getting NOTHING. (On multiple votes over the past several years, the GOP has unanimously opted for the “repeal” part.)

As it is now, the “repeal” part is embroiled in the intricacies of “replace.” And, if the Democrats can pull off just a few Republicans, what they get is: A CONTINUATION OF OBAMACARE PRIME.

That said, Gun Owners of America is a Second Amendment group. And we have concerns specific to the Second Amendment, as we related in our previous alert.

How did we get into this situation?
How did we get into this situation?

FIRST, the bill needs to be amended to prohibit the ATF from trolling the national health database, or Medicaid, or any new entitlement program for persons with PTSD, Alzheimer's, ADHD, or merely “anxiety.”

The Obama administration did that with Social Security, for the specific purpose of imposing a lifetime gun ban on millions of Americans.

As it is, “Son of ObamaCare” opens that possibility again — on a grand scale.

SECOND, the bill needs to be amended to prohibit insurance companies from asking about gun ownership, raising rates as a result of gun ownership, or even denying insurance on the basis of gun ownership.

Already, New York and California are considering using gun insurance requirements to “insure” guns out of existence.

And the last thing we need is a federal mandate (with a 30% penalty) which would have the same effect. After all, we have seen how insurance companies penalize things they don't like — or things they think are dangerous. Like smoking. Or, in some cases, gun ownership.

THIRD, the bill needs to be amended to ensure that doctors are not required — or even allowed — to ask about gun ownership and to enter that information into a federal health database.

If this were the case, that database would become an de facto national gun registry.

Incidentally, all we are asking for on the second and third points is that “Son of ObamaCare” IS NO WORSE THAN OBAMACARE PRIME.

Once again, House Speaker Paul Ryan has committed a “rookie error.” And it threatens the ability of Republicans to carry through with their most central campaign promises.

Now, unless the House passes HIS bill, Ryan is threatening to “take his marbles and go home” — thereby leaving ObamaCare in place.

It would be very difficult, in 2018, for Republicans to lose both the House and Senate — as a result of the “electoral math.”

But carrying through with the Ryan threat could well achieve the impossible.

    1. Honestly, does it really matter? I hate to be the pessimist, but no one has any sense of urgency for dealing with our $20T National Debt or the $220T in un-funded liabilities. The mathematics of “we the people” ever paying any of this back is unworkable. Think record GDP growth every year year over year for the same amount of time we’ve been a nation. Think about that. That’s just what would have to be done to potentially “break even”. We need to face it, we’re broke and deeply divided. There is only a handful of ways this ends. Unfortunately, on that short list are economic collapse a la the USSR back on 12/25/91 (and that’s the easy way out. Among the others on this short list are revolution and what I believe is the most likely due to the seeds of doscontnent having taken root, watered and heavily fertilized under Obama. Of course that doesn’t mean we do nothing, but each and every one of us needs to be preparing for the ever increasing probability that we will be fighting our own Brothers, Sisters and fellow countrymen. Our parents generation, although did an amazing thing in defeating both Hitler’s Germany and the Soviet Union, but it may have been at the expense of their nation. They also, didn’t help their posterity with their ever present compulsion for doing everything they can to ensure their children have it better than they did. Their good intentions have alienated the good ole’ rugged Americanism that this nation fostered in creating the most rapidly advancing technologies ever created. The forces created by the foundation our founding father laid for us was/is the blue print for empowering the engine human enginuity. Unless, the generation they created with their children graced us with an Einstein or Edison who will ignite the next American century with the discovery, design and implementation of something so grand, on the scale of developing a physical “warp drive engine”, or the ability to manufacture nano-materials capable of creating ultra-efficient solar power generation designs, I don’t see anything else that could bring the type of monetary velocity to the economy with any potential for outrunning our current predicament.

      1. Sheesh we need to archive this thread so others can see it in days weeks months and even years to come. EXPERTLY said Tools!!!

    2. As much as people complain about Obummercare, there is a large constituency in the middle that thinks its the right thing to do (much like they think TSA is doing a great job). Alienating this crowd will result in conservatives getting less votes. This whole issue has become a tripwire, if its is broken, conservatives will likely lose in the next round of elections. Yes it needs to be fixed.

      1. Jim
REALLY well said and absolutely the issue
WE see it as being involved in healthcare but the Polectorate sees it as a grenade to tip the election scales in 2020
ALL in all the healthcare system is something that Gov. doesn’t belong being involved in short of funding the poor who get whatever they are given and need to be thankful for the gift. The rest it is all about seeing how the various iterations of ACA and AHCA and ABC-A and XYZ-A etc pan out. If the results are good then the GOP’s stay in Congress in 2020. If not then the Dems can not only say they told them so but will put the ACA right back in after taking over the entire Fed Gov.
We all need to be scared if whatever the new bill fails and not worried about individual healthcare costs end up being.

    3. I have said all along that GOPe Republicans wanted Obummercare from the beginning & were thankful they can state on the record that they did not vote in favor of it…
