ANOKA, Minnesota-(Ammoland.com)- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently awarded Federal Premium a major ammunition contract. Starting delivery in 2018, the contract provides for up to 180 million rounds of .40 caliber Tactical HST duty ammunition to multiple Department of Homeland Security law enforcement components and other federal agencies for up to five (5) years. This contract will provide the organization’s agents and officers with .40 caliber duty and training ammunition.

This contract will provide the organization’s agents and officers with the legendary performance that has made HST a dependable and popular choice with law enforcement worldwide for two decades.

“Law enforcement and federal agencies put it all on the line for our safety and freedoms. They should expect nothing less from their ammunition,” said Mike Holm, Product Director at Federal Premium. “Federal Premium provides the top-quality products they need to have full confidence in any situation. HST has a long history of providing trusted performance time and time again for our nation’s law enforcement.”

HST’s expanded diameter and weight retention produce the desired penetration without over-penetrating. Its bullet nose profile, nickel-plated case, Federal primer, and clean-burning, low-flash propellants provide the ultimate in function and reliability in semi-automatic handguns.

I was seeing a lot of used .40S&W semi-autos on the market. I thought they were various government agency guns being phased out in favor of the 9mm. Now this – what gives?

Don, I am seeing a large number of agencies getting away from the .40 and going back to the 9mm. The company I’m involved with is doing a huge number of wound ballistic workshops for agencies making that transition. I believe the reason that many federal agencies are staying with the .40S&W right now is $$. The FBI is transitioning to the 9 but they are doing it over time in order to mitigate the cost. OF course after the crap they have been responsible for lately, they may give them BB guns.

Another big contract for 40S&W I guess it’s not as dead as everyone thought

HST is good round, however it is not a Bonded Round, SPEER Gold Dot in my opinion makes for a better performing round, bad guys do find cover and concealment, you want a round that will penetrate those type barriers, and still deliver energy and expand upon human flesh, and penetrate through to hit a vital organ, and yes SPEER Gold Dot 180 Grain JHP has an outstanding street and self defense track record, the results are out there, the medical examiner can elaborate on the wound channel and damage that this round does. All of my Weapons are loaded… Read more »

The Gold Dot is a great round but there’s nothing wrong with HST. It gets better expansion than GD and I have never personally seen it lose a jacket, even on windshield glass. I shoot a lot of gelatin and have seen them both perform very well. I generally tell folks that if you are going to shoot at folks in cars, shoot GD. Otherwise, HST is a great choice. (Little cheaper too) I’m guessing that’s why they went with it.
