76 National Rifle Association Board Member Survey Announced

Denver, CO – -(AmmoLand.com)- Save the Second (STS) is sending out surveys to all 76 National Rifle Association Board Members today.

These surveys present 10 questions that are of keen interest and importance to the vast majority of American Gun Owners who are concerned about the current state of the NRA, it’s future and the role it should play in defending Second Amendment Rights in the future.

Nine of the questions ask for “Yes” or “No” answers and are intended to determine clearly where an individual Board Member stands on a variety of issues.

“There will come a time that Board Members will need to choose between what is right and what is easy,” said Andy Lander, former NRA employee and STS Board Member.

The Surveys are being sent in several ways, including traditional and electronic mail, in order to ensure that all Board Members receive at least one copy along with the instructions for completing and returning the survey. STS will be sharing the responses with American Gun Owners before the end of the month. Board Members are being asked to return the surveys within two weeks of receiving them.

“I’m concerned that many of the Directors may refuse to respond,” said STS President Anthony Garcia, “but I think that would speak every bit as much as if they had actually returned the survey.”

Many current and former NRA Members feel that most Board Members are out of touch with American Gun Owners and not representing them or their concerns responsibly.

In April, at the Annual NRA Members’ Meeting, several Board Members took time on the microphones to chastise members who were expressing concerns about the current state of the organization & its leadership.

Ron Carter, STS Board Member and one of the concerned NRA Members who stood up to challenge the status quo in Indianapolis said  “We must have accountability and transparency from the Board. This survey can help with both.”

Another former NRA Employee and STS Board Member, Steve Hoback, who did much of the work crafting the questions in the Survey offered this challenge to the NRA Directors:

“In the shadow of our Nation’s 243rd Birthday, are YOU willing to stand up and call for reforms at our National Rifle Association? Or, are you content to sit back idly while American Gun Owners lose faith in the NRA?”

Stay tuned for continued updates.

About Save the Second

Save the Second, a non-profit organization, was formed in June of 2019 to represent the concerns of NRA Members, as well as former and potential NRA Members, who believe that the leadership and strategies of the NRA have failed and that the organization needs to be reformed in order to effectively represent American Gun Owners and their concerns. STS has proposed Five Points of Reform at their website savethe2a.org for consideration to improve the NRA.

So, why isn’t this survey being sent to all 5+ year members, who are eligible to vote? The NRA board is rigged, but rigging boards of directors is not even difficult as the principles are well understood. Literally thousands of American corporate boards are rigged utilizing nominating committees, the tendency to vote for celebrity, the tendency of not voting if one even vaguely approves of the status quo, and rewarding those board members, who cooperate. NRA is no different.

Wasted effort. In the 1990s Neal Knox and a band of reformers tried to rescue the NRA. In 1997 they lost a Board vote to replace Mr. LaPierre by 32-33 and by 2000 they were all gone from the NRA Board. The problem is twofold. (1) Wayne, who believes he is King for Life and not an employee, and (2) The post-2000 Board, led by Wayne’s sycophants, who have ignored many “red flags” and blessed his coronation as King of the NRA. They deserve the primary blame because it is their JOB to evaluate, judge, and discipline the EVP. Not… Read more »

The NRA is a members organization and we don’t have to have someone tell us how to vote and I don’t believe anyone is worth $5,000,000 a year to head our organization or even over $1,000,000 to be a lobbyist , that money should be going to programs promoting gun safety and respect lfor our heritage.

Members organization or the BOD corporation?

Unfortunately, the membership is large enough to contain a significant (if not overwhelming) contingent of low-information voters (just like the US) who will vote as they are told by their “leaders.” We saw around 20 years ago that when the NRA swamp feels really threatened, they will even resort to illegal means (their infamous “do not vote for” ads in the magazine), and are happy to pay court fines (out of your dues) well after the election theft is a fait accompli. The media circus may be damaging the organization, but I can’t think of anything else with the potential… Read more »

I don’t see how the NRA as an effective organization can exist with Wayne in control. I also don’t see how the NRA can be as effective as it really needs to be with those on the Board not recognizing and admitting to the failures of Wayne and how he has mismanaged the NRA.. There needs to be a house cleaning, we need a lean mean fighting machine to oppose those who want to destroy the 2nd. More grassroots and a lot less overpaid staff. I am a Patron Level member #4875884, I have donated in the past somewhere near… Read more »

Handle it like a stockholders meeting. Make it public. Have Wayne and his minions there to answer to the BOD and the ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP. Let the chips fall where they may. Above all, STOP THE CASH FLOW! Cut them off at the wallet.

Better than that, being a stupid SOB, I’d request names of all DOD and the districts or regions they represent. Can you or you Joe Blow do that? I can’t. This is an honest request with no malice intended. I’m sick of people talking about the BOD. Call them by name…they had no problem being named to board.Who are they…really tell me here. Oh and yes I’m a card carrier. Must have paid my dues but to Who. What do they do for me? Remember I’m just a stupid son of a bitch from Maine. I need You to enlighten… Read more »

if you were a member you would have that information already. The NRA publications sent to members have all the board member names and locations. But I am sure you already knew that and it just slipped your mind.

From all the attention the NRA is receiving by current and former members on the internet and national news, the gun hating crowd and such are back slapping each other and laughing at the NRA and gun owners. What really bothers me is airing our (NRA) dirty laundry in public. I am a life member and have been a member for close to 50 years and tears run down my cheeks as I read some of the terrible comments about MY beloved NRA. I do believe that there are problems within, and pray that we do not lose our strength… Read more »

I too am an NRA life member. Hugh, you are absolutely right. The NRA is flawed and needs reorganization but we can’t allow it to fail as it is the flagship so to speak of second amendment advocates. We can’t throw the baby out with the bath water. If the NRA were to fall the gun grabbers will have won. As it is they are like sharks circling their prey as they smell blood in the water. Save the NRA.

I think most members want to save the NRA, and I question the membership claims of many who don’t….
Fox News comments are riddled with liberal rants – why should this be any different? They are working very hard on divide and conquer….

Endowment member here, first joined when I was 21,(some 45 years ago) Hugh, you are absolutely correct.
I believe there is some under handed crap going on, some organizations, claiming to be pro 2nd, but are not.
There is only one organization that DC speaks of that is the NRA. If you want a pro 2A organization other than the NRA, fine, but don’t put down others because you think it will increase your numbers.
We have some cleaning up to do, but the gun haters are slobering on them selves right now.

The NRA is a gun sales lobby group . Its guns everywhere for everyone second amendment propganda circus just HAPPENS to coincide with a maximum gun marketplace. Jeepers !!!!! What a coincidence !!! No RESPONSIBLE gun owner would knowingly be a member of an organization which, just last year, elected a convicted gun trafficker to its presidency. As an organization which has worked hard to block safe gun storage laws, universal background checks and anything else that might impinge on the gun marketplace and gun sales, the NRA, and no one else can take ALOT of credit for the 40,000… Read more »

The first thing that needs to happen is take the corporate filing out of New York. Get it into a gun friendly state. Then all the NY gun grabbers won’t have so much say. Second, get all the top dogs out, all the do is eat the lunch we send them without any responsibility tor caring of the members.
We have to quit bad mouthing the organization and demand that the problems be fixed and within 3 months.
Assign Trump as temporary President. YOUR FIRED!!!!!!!

@Hugh, Sir, I totally agree with you. Too much lip service and no action. Posting here doesn’t effect anything in Fairfax, Va. I will continue to be a member but I don’t contribute any money. I feel my dues represent my interest in the NRA’ continuance but I’ll not donate any more until this mess is corrected.

Hugh, the problem is that keeping secrets and keeping things quiet is exactly what brought us to this point. Wayne and his inner cabal of board members are running this organization for their personal profit, and have been doing so for several decades. Anyone who tries to bring up their malfeasance is shouted down as a Bloomberg plant. Good, honest board members, and the rank and file membership have been hoodwinked by those in power into believing wild conspiracy theories about how Bloomberg et al are trying to take over the organization to justify the secrecy that gives them the… Read more »

Yeah, we aired it in private so long that finally some NRA swamp creature sued some other NRA swamp creature, the NY Times and Washington Post found out about it, followed all the leads, and aired it out for the whole world to see.

So how did that “private” strategy work out for us? Besides making the whole story that much jucier, I mean?

Ooh, a survey! That’ll be really effective in solving anything. How ’bout a spelling bee instead? That’ll work just a well. LaPierre controls the board, who can be elected and serve and more than likely has the vote tallied before the ballots are even printed up. Folks the NRA is going down thanks to LaPierre and his bought and paid for sycophants. YOU can do nothing as members except continue to fund this LaPierre led fiasco. It is like a terminally ill friend or relative that you have watched slowly dying, knowing there is nothing you can do to save… Read more »

@JPM, Getting past the line from “Tombstone”, the people of Save the Second are reaching out to us to get baseline data. Those are both good things. When is the last time someone listened to us when we had a complaint? Congress? No. President? No. S. Ct.? No. Governor? No. City Council? No. Wife? No. NRA BOD shills? No. And donations are not mandatory.
I am not fused to the concept of the NRA being gone. If these guys can reform it then good for us. I’ll participate again, but until then my contributions are going to GOA.

I’m sorry, but you are an idiot. 5 MILLION members are the NRA, not anyone else. Does the NRA need restructuring? Absolutely. Many large organizations go through this. It can be fixed, but it will take some time, and be messy.

I have been a live member since the mid ’70s. I have watched the NRA morph into a circus that uses fear-mongering to raise truckloads of money, little of which seems to go to firearm training and restoring/defending our gun rights. Ultimately, I do not blame the top leadership or the Board of Directors. I blame NRA members who persistently elect and reelect board members who refuse to restore the NRA’s core goals: firearm training and restoration and defense of gun rights. I also blame America’s gun owners who are too cheap, too lazy, or too self-righteous to become dues-paying,… Read more »

Gun owner’s who refuse to vote? Well, let’s see, Democrats tend to be anti-gun and Republicans tend to be anti-gun, so who is a gunowner to vote for? Take the guns first and follow due process later, Trump 2020

Over the last three years I have written Wayne and his shill BOD,all I have heard in return is crickets. As a result the BOD can’t be bothered by members writing, not even to reply to them so All Of management and the entire board need replacing and Must Go .
The BOD unanimously gave Wayne a vote of confidence at this last annual meeting so they should unanimously all be replaced, every last one of them.

What address should they respond to, Green Mountain Boy? Any town Vermont? Why hide all your “constructive” comments behind a pen name. You seem to have ALL the answers . Hoping one of you know-it-alls would have the answer to my question regarding BOD and accountable actions. Come on , you know you can do it.

My “hope” is that the NRA emerges from all this a much leaner, fiscally responsible, more effective organization. Sadly, I have serious doubts that’s ever going to happen. I look forward to reading the results of your survey.

I’m a Life Member and not a particular fan of surveys but since one is supposedly being done, I would make the following points:
1. The survey should be published and therefore easily available for ALL to read and evaluate.
2. When the results are compiled, those results should be made available for ALL to read and evaluate.
3. I would encourage ALL board members to make public their responses to survey questions.
4. ALL members have a vested interest in all information concerning the current internal issues and in more openness overall.
