Gun Control States See New Reality for Gun Rights

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- The past two years have witnessed gun sales the likes of which have never been seen before. It’s not just Red states either. The totals include big numbers in Blue states already home to some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.

With the midterm elections less than 10 months away, elected officials supporting more gun control could be in for a rude awakening given the shifting Second Amendment support among their voting constituencies.

Gun Sales Blue Wave

Law-abiding Americans took firm control over their personal safety and Second Amendment rights in 2020 and recorded 21 million background checks for gun sales. That number dipped only slightly in 2021 for a total of 18.5 million. Those numbers include more than 8.4 million first-time gun buyers in 2020 and more than 3.2 million in the first half alone of 2021.

National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) verifications weren’t just processed in Red, pro-Second Amendment leaning states, however. Some of the biggest figures in the previous 12 months came from Blue states, typically the home of strict gun control laws.

Of the seven states that processed more than one million NICS checks in the last year, two have Democratic governors, Democratic state legislatures, and strict gun control laws. According to NSSF’s adjusted FBI NICS data, Illinois led the way among background checks processed in 2021 totaling more than 8.4 million checks for the year. An exception to most, that total includes checks run and rerun for Illinois Firearm Ownership Identification (FOID) cards and Concealed Carry Licenses (CCLs). California came in next with nearly 1.5 million checks run.

In the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., officials there processed almost 13,000 NICS checks for a firearm transfer. That number follows more than 11,000 during 2020’s buying spree, compared to less than 6,000 in 2019 before COVID shutdowns, riots, and calls to defund the police escalated.

Even smaller Blue states, by population, experienced high marks. More than 277,000 background checks were run in Connecticut. That’s the highest number since 2016’s 316,00 checks when the prospects of an antigun Democratic-controlled White House were possible.

“(Lawmakers) will frequently talk about Connecticut as the pinnacle of what gun control should be, but Connecticut residents don’t feel safe in their communities,” said Holly Sullivan. She’s with the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, a gun-rights group that saw membership grow 40 percent to 43,000 members in the past two years. In a state with a Democratic governor, state legislator, and strict gun control laws, “Connecticut residents continue to prove they want access to firearms,” Sullivan added.

Those sentiments reverberate from sea to sea. In California, P.J. Gomez founded the Latino Rifle Association and the group has already added several hundred members. “I don’t believe self-defense…should be exclusive to people on the right politically,” Gomez said.

New Reality

Gun control groups saw the prospects of a President Joe Biden administration and Democratic control of Congress a year ago and salivated at the chance to push through more federal gun control. The American people quickly told them they had other ideas.

New data shows a clear majority – 52 percent – of self-described Democrats either personally own a firearm or live in a household with someone who owns a gun. National polling repeatedly shows gun control losing support.

That new reality has been a backstop against gun control efforts on the federal level and was realized quickly. President Biden was forced to withdraw two high-profile nominees, including paid gun control lobbyist David Chipman to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), after he couldn’t persuade even all U.S. Senate Democrats to throw their support behind them. The other was Saule Omarova, who testified she wouldn’t rule out another Operation Choke Point. She was nominated to become Comptroller of the Currency before withdrawing her name from consideration. Regarding gun control legislation, it’s been all misses as Americans rebuffed any Congressional action.

Gun control groups across the board have been vocally disappointed in their failures to impose more gun control restrictions while still ignoring the criminals responsible for the surge in criminal gun violence.  Americans continue to tune them out and turn to their local firearm retailers for new purchases.

‘Elections Have Consequences’

From local city council decisions, all the way up to the White House, gun control advocates are getting a taste of medicine from the American people and it’s a bitter pill they can’t swallow. As they’ve pushed policies that have made neighborhoods less safe, law-abiding Americans have given back a dose of their own remedy – lawfully purchasing a firearm.

The midterm elections are 10 months away and candidates are already making their positions known. NSSF launched #GUNVOTE to make sure voters know where candidates stand on Second Amendment issues so they don’t risk their rights at the polls.

If I were asked how long I would like to live, my answer would be: I’ll be ready to go when our SCOTUS steps forward and declares that the 2nd amendment to our Constitution- the second article of our Bill Of Rights- is binding on everyone, not just the members of The Congress of the United States. We don’t need to ride herd on our Congress if the individual state legislatures are going to continue making and enforcing laws contrary to the dictates of the Constitution. Infringement, regardless of who is behind it, is still infringement. When everyone owns and… Read more »

Yep… they love to talk about Kommiecticut gun laws. What they never bring up is the Armed Civil Disobedience and 85% non-compliance rate that goes along with it. They made unregulated (meaning free from gubmint interference and knowledge) private sales illegal, and ammo purchases requiring a permit, but the underground gun economy is thriving unabated. You want ammo? Sure, gimme the cash and I’ll buy it for you. Nothing is scanned or logged, you only have to display your carry permit to a cashier. Sell a rifle to your friend? No problem. They used to only regulate handgun sales, but… Read more »

“The sky is green, because I said so and I said it with authority so it MUST be true.” Remember if you tell some one or group of some ones something long enough & with enough authority you can convince them that what you said is true. The gun control people and the pro socialist gubment we now have practice this constantly. Hence, the reason for the state of the country right now and the absence of our history in schools, colleges and town squares. We may record victories in the mid-terms but with the amount of damage they have… Read more »

Yes, begin by winning, then purge the federal bureaucracy, the various school systems, and the military.

Knute Knute

That will be the tough part. What good is electing Republicans when they support the same policies and vote for the same things as the Democrats?
The choice we face in the government controlled voting is this: Heads they win, tails we lose!
“Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything.” -Stalin. Or maybe somebdoy else, depending upon which site you happen to be reading. But no matter who said it, it happens to be true.

Russn8r

Only hope is focus on primaries, never vote for Blue-Light Federalist establishment types. Even if they win, we lose.

Knute Knute

These WW2 vets tried in 1946. And won. Sort of. They bounced the then current crook…. for a few years… only to have the bad pennies come right back!
As much worse as it is now… well, I’ll just say I have lost all hope that any vote can ever be honest. That is not the way forward (except in the minds of retards like Little Harold, OFC).

win mid terms with super majority, start by ending constitutional violations remove f and e from atfe fix fbi by jailing any who violate constitution, searches seizures civil forfeiture attacks enforced as crime police and judges jailed for this crime. stealing under color of law is a crime title 18 and every one involved should be jailed. history with all its good and bad returned to school, math no calculators—-math returned to classrooms science same thing teach trades to those who cant learn abstract subjects

Arizona Don

According to the tenth amendment all federal agencies not authorized to the federal government in the constitution are up to the states. Therefore they are all unconstitutional. Not just ATF!

The tenth amendment is more infringed upon then the second. If in fact that is possible. However, no one seems to care!

Wild Bill

Respectfully, federal agencies are not mentioned in the Tenth Amendment.

If a state believes that the power reserved to it is being infringed upon by the federal government, then it is up to the state, or states, to press that claim.

“The powers not delegated to the U.S., nor prohibited to the states, are reserved to the states or the people.” ~10A

No mention of federal agencies.

Monkey Mouse

I’m surprised NJ wasn’t mentioned – the state added the most new gun owners in 2020 and 2021 (about 1M) – majority of which are women and minorities. Guess the democrats in charge didn’t appreciate it and tried to pass a new round of gun control laws and were stopped cold, not forgetting it was a CLOSE governor’s race last year – suspected foul play by the liberals for the win.

what in joysi ,naa cant be .crooked elections are the norm there. police selling permits just like nyc criminals have been running it for 100 years

Gene Ralno

Most of us old guys know precisely what’s going on. The combination of executive orders, rules, appointments, relaxed enforcement, higher prices and inflation have stimulated the criminal element. The consequence is free people of all ages are arming themselves and preparing to fight back.

We’d also like to see some statistics regarding how many victims have rap sheets vs. how many peaceable, law abiding citizens were shooters. I’d bet criminals are smart enough to flee armed citizens. And citizens generally are smart enough to resist shooting criminals in their backsides.

that is why you take quick draw classes, so you get them before they turn to run

Finnky

There is a group pushing for a “voting rights” bill. Same people also keep complaining it is to easy to buy a gun. I suggest we capitulate – offer up a “voting rights” bill which requires that voting and gun ownership must be subjected to identical restrictions (at federal, state and local levels). Thus if you can own a gun, you can vote – so they “win” on both counts. Win-win… right?

Knute Knute

Not for the liars that are in power at the moment… for THEM it’s a lose-lose! 🙂

Finnky

Precisely.

Tongue-in-cheek — yet qualifies as “malicious compliance.” Isn’t that the trend these days?

Knute Knute

Going by the votes here, It would appear that the current trend at ammoland is paid trolls! 🙂

Farmer

Sorry cupcake…just us Americans!

Knute Knute

When a mere mention of the words “paid troll” gets 8 downvotes… it should be obvious to anyone with a couple of brain cells to rub together that the paid trolls are very numerous indeed! 🙂

Knute Knute

Yeah, yeah. 4 downvotes. The same number of sock puppets as always! Do you trolls really think you’re fooling anybody? Or do you just not care so long as your govt check doesn’t bounce?
Suck it up, parent basement dwellers, because your govt checks are going to start bouncing soon! 🙂

Russn8r

Usually >4 dvs in seconds: Obvious puppet posse. Then organ grinder WB says “they” do it because you’re “churlish”. Amusing, desperate.
