Arizona Shooters Win 3 Titles At USPSA Area 2

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Washington – Arizona shooters cleaned up taking the Open Pistol, Revolver and Single Stack Pistol division titles at the United States Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Championships held over the weekend at the Rio Salado range in Mesa.

Nick Saiti of Peoria won the Open division edging out Joe Bridgman of San Diego, Calif., by just over 18 points with a match score of 1426.4408. Bridgman held the lead earlier in the match until Saiti overtook him on the seventh stage and carried the advantage through the rest of the match.

Bridgman took second with a score of 1408.0238. Michael Voigt of Chino, Calif., claimed third with 1395.7281 while Glenn Higdon of Peyton, Colo., took fourth with 1363.1353 and Canadian shooter Alex Szakacs of Oakville, Ontario finished fifth with 1355.3897.

In the Revolver competition, Richard Brethour of Tempe led a 1-2-3 Arizonan finish taking first place and the title with a score of 1492.5352. Bruce Balcom of Apache Junction claimed second with 1255.6669 and Robert Lee of Tuscon captured third shooting 1089.7867. Rounding out the top five were Mike Sousa of Cotati, Calif., in fourth with 1089.0782 and Dennis Perrin of Scottsdale in fifth with a score of 950.8912.

Mike Lin of Gilbert led the Single Stack Pistol division match from start to finish and was the third Arizonan to win a championship, shooting a score of 1385.8533. Michael Foley of Lexington, Ky., finished second with 1365.8110 while Bret Draughn of Peoria shot 1348.0275 to take third. Andrew John of Mesa and Scott Durkin of Queen Creek finished fourth and fifth shooting scores of 1329.0220 and 1210.5475 respectively.

“Arizona is regarded as one of the best places in America for competition shooting and it’s obvious from Mike, Nick and Rich’s victories, it’s also home to some of the best shooters in the nation,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of USPSA.

The USPSA Area 2 Championships were held at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club November 6-9. A total of 355 top pistol shooters competed in USPSA’s Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions at the regional championship. The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Washington as well as Canada, England, Jamaica and Norway attended.
