Washington, DC –-( Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for the year reported 14,033,824 NICS Checks for the year of 2009, a 10 percent increase in gun purchases from the 12,709,023 reported in 2008.

So far that is roughly 14,000,000+ guns bought last year!
The total is probably more as many NICS background checks cover the purchase of more than one gun at a time by individuals.

To put it in perspective that is more guns than the combined active armies of the top 21 countries in the world. countries by number of troops

Of the NICS background checks preformed less than and average .005% were denied, showing, overwhelmingly, that law abiding American citizens are the ones buying guns and that criminals are getting their guns elsewhere.

Assuming each gun buyer bought 1000 rounds of ammo for each purchase, and you and I know that it is way, way more than that, that would be easily 14,033,824,000+ billions rounds of ammo fired by USA gun owners.

What percent of people were killed or injured by this ammo…it is just to infinitesimally small for me to calculate?

      There is no correlation (sorry, ‘link’) between high gun sales and lowering crime rates. That’s just two unconnected statistics. Yes, gun masturbators like you may WANT there to be a connection.

      You may pray every night to your Republican God that there is a connection, but there isn’t. There is no connection and never will be a connection between elevated gun sales and lower crime. The US has a violent crime and homicide rate many times higher than Canada, Europe, and most of developed Asia.

      There IS a correlation (sorry again, ‘link’) between the violence of US society and its high gun sales. Americans need to stay in school, go to church less, read more, eat fewer calories, have their guns chopped up, and adopt more socially responsible policies (health care for the 50 million without, for example).

      You on the other hand, just need to stop believing all the propaganda from the NRA and other self-serving organizations like that.

How about doing a little research, before you make claims of which you obviously know next to nothing about. It’s common sense to see the practicality behind a deterrent: for protecting your child from undesirables-a watch dog in your house, or back yard is more likely to ward off potential criminals than not! If someone is attempting to choke the life out of me and has a knife, should I respond with my fist or a bat? If they had a gun, what equal or greater force can I meet them with, if not a gun?? It’s too late to call 911; and even if the element of surprise didn’t happen, how long would it take for them to respond. It’s likely that by then, that sadly, your whole family would be compromised.

      Funny thing about gun freaks; just like religious zealots, they love to quote supposedly bright people to support their arguments. The problem is that they never take the context of the quote into account. If a high school principal talked about dealing with unruly parents by “fighting them on the beaches,” most people would laugh. Well, most of the quotes on this blog are just as farcical. And blithely equating crimes statistics to an absence of handguns under homeowners pillows is equally farcical. Yes, a zealot can make any comment support his argument. At the end of the day, he’s just a silly zealot. There are just as many – and probably many, many more – statistics and quotes to support the argument that firearms are the ’cause’ of high crime and violence. But gun lovers aren’t swayed by anything that puts their chosen fetish into a bad light, are they?

      Ammoland is correct. I live in South Texas and as the economy goes further into the hole, my biggest worry has been that crime has always risen dramatically in hard times- esp since I am female. This time, it hasn’t and the fact that more people own guns has to be the cause. It certainly isn’t improved and/ or enhanced law enforcement. Murder is surprisingly low. We do have the occasional home invasion or car jacking here, though, and when the cops are too slow to respond- or don’t show up at all (and yeah, that HAS happened once), I am grateful to live in a country that doesn’t leave it’s citizens defenseless. Should that moment ever come for me, I CAN defend myself and my loved ones.

It appears to me, from talking to many new and old gun owners, that the surge in purchasing guns and ammo, is both in anticipation of large scale civil “disturbances” happening in the near future, and as a protest and statement to the Government that people are very concerned with the attacks on many of their constitutional rights and privileges, not just the 2nd amendment. The anti- firearm English were very pleased when America had a firearms drive to send weapons over to them during WWII. It seems they were worried the Germans would envade, and poor them, they were defenceless. We sent, rifles, pistols, shotguns and just about anything that would fire to them.       I strongly disagree with the above statement. I doubt anyone buys 1000 rounds of ammo for any gun they own unless they shoot competively. The price of ammo the last couple of years has skyrocketed making any ammo other than 22lr extremely costly.
      I reload and shoot weekly at a range and while I do currently have over 1000 rounds of 45acp I also have 9 weapons that use that calibre. I couldn’t imagine having 1000 rounds for my S&W 460 mag.

I don’t own a gun, but everyday it makes more sense to have one, because the American government is becoming increasingly murderous, increasingly tryrannical, increasingly feared.     40. Hey Eastwood, Both the UK and Australia recently banned private ownership of guns. In both countries the crime rate soared after. The UK has a real problem with crimes involving knives. Everyone knows knives make lousy defensive weapons. Switzerland has the highest rate of ownership of fully automatic weapons. They also have a very low crime rate. The right to self-defense is as basic as the right to life itself.

      As a canadian, I long argued for gun control laws until I had actually read what the founding fathers of the US constitution had written as a cause. their words formed a better argument than i had ever heard made.
      I would argue that the high ownership of guns in the United States is not a factor in crime. I would say that the main cause of crime is americans themselves, and their dysfunction as a society. The sheer prevalence of violence on the television screen, in daily life, video games, popular media, etc. demands that young americans today are essentially brought up in what is a culture of violence. This, combined with a lack of good social services, results in the crime rates that are seen.
      One cannot argue “many guns = low crime” any more than they can argue “no guns = high crime” it is simply more complicated than that.

      look at the example of sweden, one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world, good social services, and what do you know?? they are CLOSING prisons. they cant get enough criminals!!!

      As a ‘Brit’ the USA sometimes looks an odd country. The link above that showed more crime in the UK than the USA failed to link to the stats for murder. USA is 24th (amongst the former Eastern Block countries and ones from the developing world) and the UK is 48th.

      The citizens -not subjects- of America are regaining their right to own firearms. When the ban on “assault rifles” was lifted years ago, it was not followed by streets awash in blood as the predicted by the anti-self-defense progressives/leftists. As seen recently in DC, where once the ban on handguns was lifted the murder rate dramatically decreased, the same trend follows gun owners.

I agree with rex above that in an idealistic society without any guns in the hands of civilians, criminal or not, the kind of senseless killings committed with guns that we have to singularly live with in the US would not exist. In reality in the case of this country, however, an implementation of ban-all-guns policy would not get rid overnight of all guns held by gangs, psychopaths, etc. along with normal citizens. It will take years, decades, or longer to reduce the number of guns to even an approximate zero. Also it will be a prerequisite to completely outlaw the (huge) firearm industry, both domestic and smuggled, so that the supply itself dwindles to none especially for problematic individuals unwilling to hand over their guns. I doubt, though, that any of these Wild Wild West clowns who are so brainwashed by the persistent and systematic campaigns of the world’s largest firearms industry operating in the US would welcome giving up their toys in favor of a better society for their grandchildren.

      You are confusing two concepts. There is a positive correlation between high gun sales and lower crime rates and a negative correlation between the violence of US society and gun sales. Corelation does not guarantee causation so we cannot affirm fron this correlation that more guns mean lower crime rates (there are other ways to prove this point) but it is very difficult to substain that higher gun sales produce higher crime rates since the correlation between this two variables is negative.
