Rhode Island: Providence Passes Resolution Banning Semi-Automatic Guns

Charlotte, NC –-(Ammoland.com)-  On Thursday night, the Providence City Council passed a resolution banning all semi-automatic firearms in the city.

This resolution passed with 8 votes, 6 opposed and 1 abstention.

This sweeping gun ban proclamation is an all-out assault on the Second Amendment rights of Rhode Islanders.

Last session at the Statehouse, the NRA-ILA worked to defeat legislation that attacked the state firearms preemption statute.  Rhode Island has a firearms preemption law that prohibits local governments from adopting gun control laws which are more restrictive than state law.   Firearms preemption statutes are designed to prevent a patchwork of confusing, and sometimes conflicting, laws as residents travel from city to city.

In 2012, Senate Bill 2573 by Senator Harold Metts (D-6), now-former Senator Rhoda Perry (D-3), Senator Juan Pichardo (D-2), Senator Paul Jabour (D-5) and Senator Elizabeth Crowley (D-16) would have given control to regulate firearms and ammunition to local jurisdictions, and it would have included ownership, possession, transportation, carrying, transfer, sale, purchase delay, licensing, registration and taxation.  That dangerous legislation was defeated in a Senate committee, but it will be re-introduced again THIS SESSION.

The Rhode Island General Assembly convened for its 2013 session this week.  The NRA-ILA is working to defeat any attacks on firearms preemption prohibiting anti-gun municipalities from enacting gun bans like the one Providence has just adopted.  Anti-gun forces are moving quickly and your immediate action on this matter is urgently neededGun owners should contact their state Senator and Representative IMMEDIATELY and respectfully urge lawmakers to oppose these harmful bans which target law-abiding citizens and do nothing to improve public safety or target criminals.

They can pass all the laws on this they want- with statewide preemption the law is null and void. They are going to lose a lot of money in court if they try to arrest somebody for violations of this.

The libtards in my hometown, (Dayton,Ohio), passed a similar law some years ago. But they had to throw the law out. Seems the idiots outlawed the very guns that the Dayton Police carried. (Glock 22)

All Semi-Automatic firearms means rifles, pistols and shotguns. This is wrong. The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Its our second Amendment and God given right to protect ourselves and others.People come to America and become citizens to be free and have protection under the constitution.Alot of Americans have died in battle to keep America's freedom.Whats next they will want people to turn in their semi-auto weapons.I will die before I turn in any weapon.I hope 100 million gun owners are with me to die if need be in civil disobedience and civil war if need be.Let's march on Washington… Read more »

Gun company's should move out and take the jobs with them anyone that would pass that is wearing a hammer and cycle in disguise

It sounds like somebody needs to be prepared to be 'civil disobedient' to get this city statute into a court of law as soon as it is enacted. There is probably a person who currently does not own a firearm who can buy a semi-auto firearm and serve notice to the city that they are bringing it into the city. I suggest a non-firearm owners because I would assume that upon citation, the authorities would try to confiscate all firearms the cited person may own. Somebody like a nice grandmother type who would choose to have a self-defense weapon in… Read more »

A couple hundred years ago all New Englanders got together and burned everyone with an IQ over ten at the stake as witches , so now ,of course , there is no one there with ANY intelligence whatsoever . Therefore this STUPID and IGNORANT behavior is quite normal for them . ( They are also all enamored of Anal sex ) .

If anyone in Rhode Island feels the ground rumbling, it may be my ancestors, who lived there after coming to America in 1654.

It might be time for Winchester and Colt to look for greener pastures. It appears that NE states are starting to get hostile to their presence.

What will they miss in NE? Only a few thousand jobs. No big deal, until it hurts their economy. Boo Hoo when they leave.

They tried this crap in Florida and our legislators put monetary punishments for cities, counties and individual officers in order to put teeth in our preemption law. It works well and we have low violent crime rates.
