Newington, NH (Ammoland.com)- SIG SAUER, Inc., has issued the following statement about the recent opinion by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in regard to the SB15 and SBX pistol stabilizing braces.

As reaffirmed in an Open Letter by ATF’s Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division dated January 16, 2015, the Pistol Stabilizing Brace (SB15 and SBX) is legal to own, legal to purchase, and legal to install on a pistol. SIG SAUER believes that the PSB improves the single-handed shooting performance of buffer tube equipped pistols, and offers the product both as an accessory and pre-installed on a number of pistols.

The Open Letter goes further to rescind a previous private letter regarding the ‘intent’ of the user of the pistol stabilizing brace. In the letter of January 16, 2015, ATF opines that a person’s actual use of the product as a shoulder stock can change the legal classification of the product. However, the Open Letter explicitly states:

“ATF hereby confirms that if used as designed—to assist shooters in stabilizing a handgun while shooting with a single hand—the device is not considered a shoulder stock and therefore may be attached to a handgun without making a NFA firearm.”

“We question ATF’s reversal in position that the classification of the brace may be altered by its use. We are reviewing the legal precedents and justification for this position, and will address our concerns with ATF in the near future. We will vigorously defend the classification of all of our products and our consumers’ right to use them in accordance with the law. If we find that the open letter opinion is outside the scope of the law, we will seek further review.”

If you use the sig brace from the shoulder your body and brain must be the same size…tiny. A normal size person can’t seriously shoot an AR pistol with their nose resting against the charging handle. Unless of course, you use a longer buffer tube designed to be used from the shoulder then your just being stupid.

And all of you bitching at each other about who is right and who is wrong does not help our fight. We can only win by all of us stick together not bitch at each other about who is right. Everyone is passionate, everyone is right sometimes, sometimes wrong but we must be together.

ScottM is right on the money. Common sense is lacking, to be sure. Dave, you’re one of the reasons these problems come up.

ScottM

“Well meaning” people couldn’t leave well enough alone. They had to keep writing letters to ATF and posting youtube videos flaunting the use of the brace as a stock until ATF was left with no other choice. I have to equate this with the reckless open carry of long guns into restaurants by other ‘well meaning’ but clueless individuals. We are often our own worst enemies.

Let’s start using common sense!

JoeC

What he said. Don’t poke the Bear!

dave

You are just a coward that wont fight to regain back all of your gun rights for fear that you might lose. Patriots and gun owners don’t need or want little wusses like you to help us fight for our lost rights. Go crawl back in your mommys womb.

brett

Just curious, what kind of fighting is it that you do?

ScottM

You have zero idea what I have accomplished fighting for 2nd rights. I just use common sense rather than blatant in-your-face stupidity.

That is all.

ScottM

BTW, I don’t use the term ‘common sense’ the way the liberal gun grabbers use it. My definition includes actions that don’t get me arrested for using a brace as a stock or shot for open carrying an AR15 inside a store or restaurant.

Me Again

“Common sense” would be outlaw the domestic enemy and NOT sucumb to more control.
The BATFE are out of control, disregard constitution rights, and have scant regard for the judicial system.
Go watch the raid on Ares Armor, one of those thugs is on camera saying “that was fun” as they left, having torn the place to bits

… so ScottM. will you be (or are you) one of those tattle-tails at the range?

Eric

The biggest problem is different ATF officals give their interpetation of USC . Then they give an individual a letter stating their opinion of the question. They change their view whenever they want . Examples are 80% ar15 lowers how much completion makes it a firearm . EPlower’s 80% polymer lower if the fire control area was already inside first what difference does it make the fire control area is solid. Eparmory had a letter stating their lower was not a firearm dated july 20 2013 , feb 7 2014 their opinion reversed under pressure most likely from Feinstein and… Read more »

Fed Up

The ATF is trying to write laws. Legislation has to be written by Congress.

Me too...

Yup, you right.

Faux laws from a faux department, but hey, what do ya expect under a FAUX “President”?

Said “President” has shown no respect for the constitution or the legislative process. Wouldn’t surprise me if this is another (behind the scenes) executive order…

What’s next? As this is almost impossible to enforce, perhaps it will fall in the “can be used in this manner, therefore must be banned” category…

Then bump fire stocks, then 80% lowers, then ???

jman57

In fairness the BATF and the ridiculous NFA has been in effect our entire lifetime. If you think any president is gonna step in on a SBR ruling you’re kidding yourself.

Janek

The January 20th issue of Shotgun News contains an article by Steven Matthews titled “Build a Faux SBR”. One of the components for this ‘gun building’ project is the SIG SB-15 brace. In the near future can we expect the ATF to render an opinion on the legal status of ‘hobbyists’ who undertake building this project?

Michael Belmont

The brace in the picture is a SB15,not an SBX.
