Gov. Hochul: Here’s What the Data Actually Says

U.S.A. -( It only took 30 seconds, that’s all. New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul held a press conference calling back her state’s legislature for an “extraordinary” session to pass more gun control after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York’s restrictive and subjective “may issue” pistol permit license scheme.

In 30 seconds, she vocalized why her gun control agenda is destined to fail.

Failed Approach

Gov. Hochul exclaimed, “I’m absolutely shocked,” after the Supreme Court held in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that the Second Amendment protects the right of law-abiding Americans to carry a firearm in public for self-protection. She shouldn’t be. It only takes a simple reading of the actual amendment.

She called her state’s Democratically-controlled legislature back to Albany to restrict where licensed conceal carry permit holders can lawfully carry their firearms. The new laws include even more restrictive provisions like background checks and a state database for ammunition purchases, increased training requirements to obtain the permit, a mandatory sit-down, in-person interview and even requiring applicants to submit social media accounts for content review.

“Do you have the numbers to show that it’s the concealed carry permit holders that are committing crimes? The lawful gun owner will say you’re attacking the wrong person,” asked Albany-based CBS 6 News anchor Anne McCloy. “It’s really people that are getting these guns illegally that are causing the violence, not the people that are going to get the permit legally and that’s the basis for the whole Supreme Court argument. Do you have the numbers?”

“I don’t need to have numbers,” the governor shot back. “I don’t have to have a data point to point to to say this is going to matter.”

That’s what is called “the tell.”  These laws aren’t aimed at stopping criminals. They’re designed to rob law-abiding citizens of their rights.

What’s The Data Say?

Some estimates suggest New York has more than 200,000 concealed carry permit holders. For the entire United States, it’s over 21.5 million. These are law-abiding gun owners that meet state requirements and were approved after an FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) verification. New York is one of the states with the most stringent conceal carry requirements.

The actual data shows that concealed carry permit holders are among the most law-abiding people in America. The Heritage Foundation’s 2019 data says, “… concealed-carry permit holders accounted for 801 firearm-related homicides over a 15-year span, which amounts to roughly 0.7% of all firearm-related homicides during that time.”

A Fox News report paints a picture Gov. Hochul would rather ignore. According to the FBI, Census Bureau, and Rand Corporation data, states with lower rates of gun ownership and more restrictive gun control – like New York – have more firearm murders per 100,000 residents as a percentage of the gun-owning population than states with high gun owner rates.

New York ranks fifth, with just 19.9 percent of households saying they possess a firearm and 1.53 firearm homicides per 100,000 residents. The Violence Policy Center attempted to “fact check” a claim about concealed carry holders committing fewer crimes but ended up “revealing” there were 37 firearm incidents (not specifically intentional homicide) involving concealed carry permit holders between May 2007 and May 2022. That’s less than 2.5 per year in the entire country.

Crime rates, especially in New York City, continue to climb.

Gov. Hochul and Albany Democrats praised themselves for their “fast work” to jam through more restrictions on law-abiding New Yorkers. The policies won’t stop criminals from perpetrating their crimes. It will, however, turn law-abiding New Yorkers into criminals overnight when enacted in a few months.

Gov. Hochul isn’t to be bothered with facts.  She doesn’t need the data or the science. She doesn’t even need to focus laws on holding criminals accountable. When it comes to gun rights, Gov. Hochul needs only the echo chamber of New York’s legislature to nod in agreement as they strip New Yorkers of their rights.

seems this critter and the rest of the state could well benefit from some legal action against this wretched piece of work to remvoe her from office for faiing to uphold the rights of her “subjects” as her oath of office binds her to do. She swore to uphold and defend the RIGHTS of the people of that state, as well as to faithfully execute the laws enacted by that state’s legislators.

Anyone who is dumb enough to vote for Hochul to extend her inherited reign as the governor of New York, deserves exactly what they’re gonna get. Sadly, it will all be at the expense of the law abiding inhabitants and visitors of the state and, especially, to the city of New York.

Hochul is just trying to preserve the NY State 2nd Amendment.

A heavily regulated citizenry, being necessary to the security of the progressive State, the right of law enforcement officials, active and retired, to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Totalitarians always disarm their citizens.
Hochul doesn’t care about data.
This isn’t about “Public Safety”.
For all the same reasons totalitarians have always disarmed citizens.

Makes me wonder if, er, squeeze me, makes me KNOW this creture is in the bag with the same handlers of certain others in these Unted States, which handlers seem to be running the show from behind the curtain. Far too many “governors” of late have begun singing exactl the same song, almost word for word. WHO is behind the curtain, pulling the levers and pushing the buttons.

For the billionth time…..

ANY so-called “gun control” is NEVER about crime, saving lives or for the children. It is simply about disarmament. That is all.

Well if that’s the case then she won’t bother with you since she protects the criminals anyway. Typical Democrat hates America and the laws there are sworn to uphold, that’s funny, like any of them do . Karma is a bitch .

Karma is a bitch .

So is Hochul!

The “good” governor’s very demeanor and attitude reeks of piety and self aggrandizement. “Me and my ilk are special, you plebes bow before me and kiss my ring. I’ll decide who can defend themselves from the criminals that we are letting run rampant in New York. My criminal cops will continue to arrest and prosecute any of you that have the audacity to think that you’re lives are worth protecting. Now leave my presence you piss ants!”

Grammar police here… “Data Actually Says…” Nope. Data is plural. Should be, “Data Actually Say…”

I disagree with your assessment and here is why. It’s like other words that have taken on meanings other than the ones they were originally intended for. Like motor for an automobile that is gasoline powered. Or dollar for a piece of paper that you use to “buy” things with. Data as singular is the most common way it is used these days.

Just because its “common use” is acceptable doesn’t mean its correct. Winchester is correct, Get over it.

No, he is not correct. Common use is what makes something have a meaning. It is not ALWAYS the original use. Like I said, what is a “DOLLAR”? Do I have an ENGINE in my gasoline powered automobile or a MOTOR? Do I have a VEHICLE or an automobile? People like you make me ill. Your response just shows what an ignorant ass you are.

We aren’t here for a Grammer lesson. This is about an out of control governor in NY. Let’s not loose focus here.

However, if you want the facts about the word Data (which IS the plural of Datum), this is directly from the Merriam-Webster dictionary: Is Data singular or plural? Data leads a life of its own quite independent of datum, of which it was originally the plural. It occurs in two constructions: as a plural noun (like earnings), taking a plural verb and plural modifiers (such as these, many, a few) but not cardinal numbers, and serving as a referent for plural pronouns (such as they, them); and as an abstract mass noun (like information), taking a singular verb and singular… Read more »

However according to my research which extends beyond the Merriam Webster dictionary the word datum is pretty much NEVER used anymore. And data is used as plural or singular. The problem is that MOST OF THE TIME it’s used as a singular word. So, back at you the person who doesn’t want to loose focus. And the way I look at what being here for is…if you don’t LIKE what I have to say, then give me a thumbs down. Or IGNORE ME. Geezzzz…it’s sooooo difficult.

Wild Bill

Publishers have standards because they have to be correct.. Common usage is just that … common as opposed to correct.
I have never cared to depend upon Merriam-Webster because they “make modern allowances”. And the internet is too subject to agendas to be authoritative on any subject.

Lose not loose.

Ah someone ELSE caught that one.. used (misused) several times above.

Perhaps the old War mantra “loose lips sink ships” should have been instead “loose lips lose ships”. Mayhap then followed by the command “don’t be a loser”.

woids Ain’t dey loads a fun?

Haw! Good one! Let’s not loose instead of lose.

A motor is electric.

Except when it’s perpetual.

they can be hydraulic, turbine, gas, phtovoltaic………

It is quite English to refer to a self-propelled gasoline or diesel fueled vehicle as a “motorcar”. Older English refer to the device converting the fuel into kinetic energy as an “engine” or a “motor”. German always uses “motor”. So to spanish spealers. “el motor” Being a mechanic on all manner of machinery for half a century now, I have some knowledge of the matter. Now, we could have some fun with words like “sparking plugs”, tappet clearance, gudgeon pin, … What I find very amusing is that, in the works (factory workshop manuals for Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Audi, the… Read more »

Ironically, you wrote “its” (possessive pronoun) — TWICE — when you meant to write “it’s” (contraction of “it is” or “it has”). Sorry ’bout that.

Wild Bill

Yes, although, it is funny how the correct English sometimes grates on the ears.

the word is directly from latin. Datum is one point, data are plural points.

No getting around it. Some even today will use the singular form when appropriate. The near universal use today is not proof it is correct, only that far too many are too lazy to learn its proper use.

How often do you hear someone say “a myriad of_____”? Incorrect.
One never would say “a green of house” indicating a house painted green. Myriad is an adjective. The above sample attemts to turn it into a noun.

Who gives a s&%t?

I used to run a professional sales force (quarter-million dollar industrial products), and would tell my salesmen to make sure their suits were pressed and their shoes were shined. Most clients wouldn’t notice or care, but you never knew when someone WOULD. Same for proper English. Let’s not give the Left reasons to call us ignorant rednecks.

Wild Bill

I agree about lowering standards, and welcome to the site.

Nope. Data is both singular and plural……this data, these data, that data, those data, your data, my data, our data, more data, less data. Well,……you get it.

Once again, “liberalism is a mental disorder”.
-Michael Savage

The Democratic Party is a magnet for these HATERS.
They HATE America’s Bill of Rights.
It has become the Party of Hate.

Do forget there was around a dozen RINOS senators that signed on with the last iteration of gun ban legislation.

Fifteen is what was reported.

Michael Savage didn’t say that, I said that.. well…he may have said it as well. Nevertheless, yes; I find one has to be semi-retarded to be a fascist-liberal nut. I mean, you would have to be.

“I don’t need to have numbers,” the governor shot back. “I don’t have to have a data point to point to to say this is going to matter.”
really? aren’t you suppossed to use facts/data/statistics/evidence/research to make decisions or public policy. oh, i forgot, lefties use feelings to decide those things.
wow, talk about living under a rock.

People like her are heading for a rude awakening. Just looking at her makes me ill.

Kathy Hochul Any New Yorker got a bucket of water to throw on this evil witch.  Bottom line is to be elected governor of New York, particularly as a Democrat, you need to be able to form a multiracial and cross-regional coalition. And right now she’s the only candidate in position to do that.” The democratic party will throw millions and more million to ensure she gets elected. This June there was 21 million in her campaign fund New York Democrats enjoy a 4 million voter registration advantage over Republicans. “ Honchul is not working class her and her husband are… Read more »

I will laugh when she is voted out

I hope you’re right because her attitude is spitting in the face of EVERYONE, lefties, righties, uppies, downies…it doesn’t matter. If you BELIEVE you have a right to defend yourself she is saying, “I decide who gets to defend themselves! And it isn’t you, because YOU’RE NOT IN THE CLUB!”

I had high hopes for he after cuomo left, mainly because she’s not from NYC. The instant she opened her pie hole, those hopes were dashed. She’s as bad as any and worse than most dems.

Patriot Solutions

Cabalarado is full of Hochuls and RMGO is stepping up to the plate with what I entirely agree with being a 4 ton wrecking ball.

There is clearly enough precedent on the books to flip Cabalarado back to the constitutions.
