The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today promptly applauded Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst’s introduction of legislation to prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from arming its agents
Ernst is calling her measure the “Why Does the IRS Have Guns Act.”
“That’s really a very good question,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Why has the IRS spent millions of dollars on weapons and ammunition since the start of the coronavirus pandemic three years ago? According to a published report, the agency spent $2.3 million on ammunition, another $1.2 million on ballistic shields, $243,000 on body armor, nearly $475,000 on Smith & Wesson rifles and $463,000 on Beretta tactical shotguns.
“One has to wonder whether IRS agents are working for the taxpayers, or preparing to go to war against them,” he mused. “The worst thing people should ever face from the IRS is an audit, not a firing squad.”
Ernst’s legislation will prevent the IRS from buying, selling, or storing firearms and ammunition 120 days after enactment and require the IRS commissioner to transfer guns and ammunition to the General Services Administration, where it would be auctioned off to federally-licensed firearms dealers to help bring down the federal deficit.
“Unfortunately,” Gottlieb quipped, “contributions to the Citizens Committee to support this legislation are not tax deductible. On the plus side, this means making a donation won’t trigger an IRS audit.
“American taxpayers feel intimidated enough by the IRS without facing the prospect of armed agents coming to our doors,” he observed. “What is truly alarming is that this has been going on for years, at the cost of more than $35 million since 2006. However, over the past couple of years, it appears the Biden administration has literally weaponized the agency, and the American public should not be amused.”
“Disarming the IRS will make us all feel safer, and we’re delighted Sen. Ernst is willing to do something about it.”

really, why does the irs need weapons? you can’t get into a government building without going through a metal detector. are they for intimidation? are they going to come to our houses and kick in doors? i would like to see them at my door and see what happens. don’t they have federal law enforcement agents that can do the door kicking?
it would be nice if the government spent our money like it was theirs instead of ours. if government waste, fraud and abuse were completely stopped no one would have to pay federal income tax.
The IRS needs “weapons of war” because the Internal Revenue Code requires you to file an accurate tax return and there needs to be consequences if you don’t file an accurate tax return or you fail to pay the amount you agree you owe once you file your accurate tax return. The nonsense about “representative” government, a fair system of taxation, “equal opportunity does not mean equal results”, the “People” (one of my favorites), etc. are possibly matters of “protected speech”, but irrelevant once you agree that you owe taxes or fail to file an accurate tax return. In a… Read more »
so they should go after the people that owe them hundreds of thousands and not $5k.. however that’s not the case is it??? They go after the little people who can’t defend themselves. That’s why they need weapons.
“you can’t get into a government building without going through a metal detector.”. Don’t forget that metal detectors will not protect them since it is perfectly legal to carry your weapon in to federal building. This is because federal law says you can carry in ‘federal facilities” for “lawful purposes”. But that is not a reason for them to have weapons. They may arm themselves personally, just as I may. They can call 911 and have local police come to protect them, just as I may. For them to use my tax money to abuse my rights with their free… Read more »
For a clerical concern, IRS stockpiles ordnance in quantity impossible to explain.
This will go about as well as the censoring of Bug Eye Schiff, In other words not a chance in hell.
It’s simple. We can’t go to digital currency unless ALL currency is put in your favorite socialist banking institution. However, there’s a gold mine of cash in people’s mattresses and if you deposit more than $600 (remember the push for that amount?) You’ll have to pay a tax on unrealized capital gains when you deposit the money. If you repeatedly deposit sums of cash over this amount you will get a visit from your armed IRS agent who is investigating you for laundering cash for a criminal organization. Think of those large stacks of cash currently stored in cartel houses,… Read more »
In actuality, since we the taxpayers bought the firearms, ammo, body armor, they should be given back to us the taxpayers free of charge. All taxpayer names entered into a simple drawing. They can use the gov’t. franking privileges to mail them out.
Logically, IRS agents and other government agents, should have the same right to be armed as the rest of us! No more, no less. Therefor, they should be buying their own guns, etc. BTW, some years ago, an IRS agent came to my business, by appointment. I felt sure that he was armed but was not in fear because of it. None of this means that I like IRS, or that I think they are honest, but it is a fact of life! At least for the foreseeable future.
I’m thinking that maybe one should ask themselves; How many military age males, and females have come across the so called border?
I hope I’m wrong but it makes one wonder is this the why certain Gov. agencies Rec.so much ammo, and arms?
Not only are the bastards threatening to come take our guns, is this supposed to mean they’re coming for our money as well? What’s next – Wildlife Police coming for our mounted trophies?
I had a friend who had been a career IRS agent. When on duty, he was armed with a Colt .38 Special snubby. When he retired, he gave me his duty holster–a nifty leather piece with a spring steel belt clip on the back. He told me that wearing a gun every day had become a “moral burden” for him that he just didn’t want to carry as a civilian. Throughout his career he investigated various criminal enterprises where being armed was very reasonable protective behavior. He never did routine audits or investigated normal civilians–just actual criminals. I’m putting this… Read more »
Still seems like the “IRS” part of an investigation should be conducted from a desk on the 14th floor of the Federal Building. If an IRS rep. Needs to be on site, in the field, he can request support from the county sheriff, a precinct constable, or a municipal police agency.
“But, there are some cases where being armed is a reasonable action.”.
True, but we are at war with our over-reaching government. We are also armed now. I don’t think it is wise for them to push their reasonable actions on us. There is too much bad water under the bridge.

Or, as a friend used to say, it’s just water under the fridge.
That is what they claim.
Are you a guitar man?

Good for you. Humanity would be very far removed from pleasure without music from so many souls that have the rhythm, the voice, and the instrumentals.

So who in the federal government should have arms? The Military, obviously. And Secret Service, U.S. Marshals, FBI agents in the field, Postal Inspectors, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Park Rangers with police powers or in dangerous environments. Maybe the Capital Police after a suspension and (re-?)training. NOT the ATF, IRS, Dept. of Education or any other of the many alphabet agencies that have armed up. In fact, shrink the ATF and divide what’s left between IRS for collecting taxes and FBI for investigations. Did I miss anyone?
Take postal inspectors off the “armed” list, too.
No, they end up in some sketchy neighborhoods. I wouldn’t play in some of those areas without being armed. Besides it they are cops.
Disarm all of them except the military in war time and during training.
They can call 911 if they need protection.
HLB
I’ll be go to hell!
Of course, arm yourself.

IRS was on my list to disarm though Cappy presents an argument for situations where it is prudent.
Damn! I’ve had mixed luck with IRS and MO Dept. of Rev. Were you using H&R Block people or software? I started using their software in the early ’80s, TaxCut back then, when a simple arithmetic error cost me several hundred in fines. I have only had one issue with the Block software and their customer support helped me work around that with a manual edit. No audits yet, knock wood. Cool that you board horses; a business like that must complicate your taxes a lot. Mine only run about 25 pages for Fed.
Do you mean to tell me that an IRS agent knows the difference between a racehorse and a quarter horse?
C’mon man! Ouch! Damn, just bit my tongue.
LOL. Don’t scare me by suggesting AZL is a 3 letter agency of the federal government!
Measure this
A most excellent article however this doesn’t even crest the pinnacle of the iceberg of armed alphabet agencies that has been taking place since the Gulf War and amped up since 9-11. Agencies you wouldn’t even suspect to have a potato gun are heavily armed at taxpayer expense. Either America has already forgotten, didn’t give a damn while it was happening or just flat out don’t give a damn. As for our border situation? I seen one response calling it a “supposed border”. Military aged males are being ALLOWED into our country unchecked, Democrats are pushing bills to give illegals… Read more »
In the movie “3:10 to Yuma” the bar tender girl told Glenn Ford they really did not know where the border was. It was open then and it is open now. Just like all the towns people in the movie, it is up to us.

And it states, “Not to be used for Identification.”
CCRKBA more COP haters just like Ernst!
Big fan of government thugs, huh?
