U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)- James Yeager of Tactical Response made a post on Instagram about the recent shootings in California, Texas, and Ohio. He talked about how things are going to get worse, and there are “no more days off.” He insists people “run, hide, fight.”

Yeager thinks that we need to carry our gun everywhere we go to be safe. Although statistics show that most people will probably never need to pull their firearm, those that do never know when they will be forced to defend lives with their gun. This is personal for me because my mother was forced to shoot a home invader before my first birthday.

If you are not armed, then you are putting yourself and the lives of the people you are with at danger. It is about mitigating risk, and that is what a gun does when you carry one. A firearm can give you a fighting chance, but only if you have the training and ability to use it.

When talking to Hank Strange on my internet show he and I agree that gun-guys don’t always take enough training to be proficient with their guns. In gun culture, we spend a lot of money on firearms. Maybe we should skip the next latest and greatest handgun and take a class, or two to be able to properly use the ones we have already.

The mantra “run, hide, fight” is not unique to James Yeager. When I worked for the government, we had to go through training in case the job sent us somewhere that was less than safe. Although this was training for high threat post, it still can be used for everyday situations.

The agencies I have worked for taught us when we were in danger to get “off the X” and get to safety. Yeager’s thinking is to run towards the gunfire and seek cover before returning fire at the attacker.

On the other hand, our trainers taught us to look for an exit. If no exit could be found, then find a defensible position that offered cover and concealment enabling us to fight back from a hardened position. I was not working in a security role, so the officers responsible for security might have had different training similar to what Yeager is talking about.

Some from the anti-gun side push the false narrative that Yeager’s method or even the methods of other trainers that have taught me do not work in a mass shooting situation. Not only do they work, but we also have real-world examples where firearms carriers have prevented mass shootings by being armed.

In January of this year at Club 3208 in Huntsville Alabama, there was a fight between customers. The venue ejected one of the patrons from the premise. That patron would return later with an AK-47 and open fire at the night club.

Military vet, firearms instructor, and private security office, Latoya Harris (better known on Instagram as Trill Toya), saw the man firing his rifle at the club. Harris was armed, so she ran to cover behind a car. She drew her gun maneuvered around the vehicle and fired her firearm, hitting the would-be murderer ending the attack and saving lives.

Harris secured the attacker’s rifle and then started performing first aid on the man that just tried to carry out a mass shooting. He would survive. The local police hailed her as a hero. There is no doubt she saved multiple lives that night including her own.

In the video, Yeager talks about the need to get first aid training. I wholeheartedly agree with him on that point. First aid training might not be as glamorous as a pistol or rifle class, but it is just as important. That life you save might be your own.

Carrying around a full med kit might not be practical, but some things are small enough for our EDC. Yeager points out everyone should carry a tourniquet. Even a good quality tourniquet isn’t going to break the bank and is small enough to be carried in your pocket, but having a tourniquet is not enough. You need to know how to use it.

I also carry quick clot in my bags and in my cars. I take full first aid kits with me in my vehicles. These skills and tools are far more useful than the off chance you have to treat a gunshot wound. A few months ago, on my way to a shoot, I cut open my hand. It was a deep cut. I was able to treat my wound with my kit and drive myself to the hospital.

I think the main take away from Yeager’s video is that we need to be prepared for the unknown. We don’t know what the future holds, but we can mitigate the risk.

I believe your conduct in a armed conflict is a crap shoot at best but experience can prevail. Although similar each shootout has its moments. Remember what General George Patton is reported to have said: You do not want to die for your country but make sure some other dumb bastard died for his”. Whether you are patrolling a dirty dusty desert street or a jungle trail or even a urban street in the USA. Your body is on alert, your brain is in speed mode and you are trying to be calm but ready. When it hits the fan… Read more »

You and me both brother. With two bad knees I’m not running anywhere anymore. There was a time when it was tactical training every single year, shoot houses and thousands of rounds expended. Of course those were also days of bad guys pointing guns our way also!

Now it’s shuffle off to WallyMart and 1. Hope you get a cart that rolls easily and 2. Try and stay the hell out of harms way!

@Vanns40

Considering I had my first knee operation at 16, I’d stand with both of you gentlemen, or even out in front if needed. Perhaps I have an idea that might be worth looking into though.

Any thought of a swivel mount on that “cart” ? Perhaps there is room for a sort of lightly armored mechanized infantry for those who don’t wish to hide, but cant run either.

“GUN FREE ZONE” Has to be the Most Dangerous Place in the USA to SHOP.
GUNS Save LIVES. I’m to Old to Run, so I’ll have to Hide or Fight.

Huapakechi

The longer you remain in the field of fire, the more likely you are to be hit. Running away does not remove you from the kill zone. Putting rounds on the attacker does tend to discourage ’em.

Great article. Unfortunately in the State Of Maryland, there is ZERO chance at getting a carry permit and beleive me, there are many times when I am in the city that I would feel a lot more safe if I had one. I am a responsible gun owner. I belong to two clubs and safety is paramount. I own guns for just the pure joy of range shooting but I admit, there are times I wish I had the option to carry.

HERE IS YOUR AVAILABLE RESPONSE WHEN THAT HAPPENS: File Criminal Perjury charges against the politicians who make those illegal laws. GROUNDS: 1. Perjury of “Oath of Office” (a felony) Violation there of of the First sentence of the Oath. ( There are both Federal and State laws covering these and will not cost you a penny. After charges are filed the Dist. Attorney has to prove the act and that is easy because they passed a bad law according to the Supreme Court Decision of 1803 ” That any Law Repugnant to the Constitution is Null and Void .” Plus… Read more »

Have you applied for a Maryland CCW permit? If not do so and make them tell you they will not issue you a CCW, you might get lucky.

Bill

More reasons to move to gun friendly states. I moved from California to Texas and so glad I did!!

Jim

Unfortunately so have tens of thousands of liberals running from the crazy out of control state they created to the state they will (again) change to their way of stupidity. Texas is already seeing it with some of their nut case politicians. Get ready Texas!

A good handgun, don’t leave home without it. Thanks James and John, good advice.
