WASHINGTON, DC – -(Ammoland.com)- On Sunday, May 25, 2014, Caplin & Drysdale’s founding member Mortimer M. Caplin will be honored with an award at the 3rd Annual ParadeRest Memorial Day festivities in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The event will feature special appearances by highly-decorated World War II veterans and will mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion on June 6, 1944 of Normandy, France.

As part of the initial landing forces on Omaha Beach, Lieutenant Caplin was commander of a U.S. Navy Beach Party that served as the communications and physical link between ships at sea and the beach.

During a prolonged period of high surf, Lieutenant Caplin ordered the captain of a “Liberty” ship (or cargo ship) to run his vessel aground to off-load its vital cargo of ammunition. The Liberty ship captain refused. Lieutenant Caplin repeated his order, invoking the name of an imaginary U.S. Army major general. The captain complied, ran the Liberty ship aground, and the ammo off-load began. Soon after, tank and artillery rounds were headed north on Army trucks to support American soldiers as the fighting raged inland.

Awarded the French Legion of Honor medal for his contributions during the Battle of Normandy, Mr. Caplin also played a vital role in coordinating the traffic of troops, supplies, ammunition, casualties and prisoners. After the war, he returned to his law practice and law professorship at the University of Virginia. He reentered public service in the 1960’s as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. In 1964, Mr. Caplin launched Caplin & Drysdale, a 70-attorney law firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and New York City which celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2014.
