Wisconsin –-(Ammoland.com)- Nearly 250,000 law-abiding Wisconsin residents have obtained a concealed carry license since Wisconsin passed its concealed carry law (Act 35) in 2011.

As Wisconsin Carry’s Board of Directors seeks to continue our mission to preserve and expand the right-to-carry of law-abiding Wisconsinites, we believe that the greatest hindrance to your right to carry, and greatest jeopardy you face, are “school grounds”.

Wisconsin’s “gun free school zone” law makes it a felony to carry on school grounds.

If you are dropping your kids off at school and do not disarm, unload, and place your firearm in a case, before you pull onto the school driveway, you are committing a felony.  If you walk your kids to school and you cross the street and step ONE foot on school property while armed you are committing a felony.

This is wrong. This needs to change.  Its unconscionable that law-abiding mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older brothers/sisters and other guardians should risk a felony for the mere act of exercising their human right to self-defense while they pick up or drop off kids from school.  How many other constitutionally guaranteed human rights can one exercise and make an ‘honest mistake‘ and end up with a potential felony. 18 other states allow CCL holders to carry on school grounds.  The Federal Gun Free School Zone law ALLOWS CCL holders to carry on school grounds.  Wisconsin’s GFSZ law does not (because when Wisconsin passed its GFSZ law, we didn’t have concealed carry).  This is an oversight that must be corrected.

Do not think your local police or DA would use discretion.  Multiple law-abiding people have accidentally carried onto school grounds and been charged with a felony here in Wisconsin in the last couple years. Its morally wrong for your right to self-protection to be denied to you on the grounds of schools you yourself pay for with your hard-earned property tax dollars.

We can also turn on the news and see that criminals seek out schools where they know everyone will be unarmed, to carry out lunatic murderous rampages on defenseless people.

Last fall Wisconsin Carry initiated a PR campaign announcing that we would be seeking legislation to allow concealed carry license holders to carry on SCHOOL GROUNDS.  News media all across the state reported our initiative.

Media reports:

Now that the new legislature has taken office, its YOUR turn.

PLEASE take this opportunity to contact your State Senator and Assembly Representative.  Find your elected reps using the following link:

https://maps.legis.wisconsin.gov/

Call, email, or write your state legislators and ask them to support “school grounds carry for Concealed Carry License holders” just like the Federal GFSZ law allows.

The FEDERAL Gun Free School Zone law has a provision that ALREADY allows carry on school grounds by CCL holders, but since Wisconsin’s GFSZ law was passed before we had concealed carry, it didn’t adopt that section of the Federal GFSZ law.  Since we now have concealed carry, Wisconsin should adopt that section as well.  This would allow all CCL holders to carry on school grounds.

Here is the language in the Federal GFSZ law that allows carry on school grounds by CCL holders:

(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license;

Contact your state legislators.  Ask them to support adoption of the language of the federal GFSZ law to allow CCL holders to carry on school grounds.

Ask your legislator if they would be willing to introduce the legislation as well.

Please provide any feedback you receive back to Wisconsin Carry. We are maintaining a database of legislative contacts and legislator’s position on the right of law-abiding Wisconsin citizens to be free from risking a felony for the innocent act of picking up kids from school.

If you pick up the phone and make the call, or send an email, we CAN make this change in Wisconsin. If you decided not to take 5 minutes of your day to make a contact with your legislator, this effort will fail.  What will you do?

About:
Wisconsin Carry, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and reclamation of the rights of law-abiding Wisconsin residents to carry in the manner of their choosing. We believe that “open carry” and “concealed carry” are choices to be made by law-abiding citizens based on their situation and preference. Wisconsin Carry, like many gun-rights organizations in Wisconsin, is investing a great deal of resources to get Wisconsin law changed to allow concealed carry this next legislative session by proposing Constitutional Carry. Wisconsin Carry, Inc. will continue to use legal recourse to deter unlawful treatment of law-abiding Wisconsin residents who currently exercise their right to open carry, and soon will exercise their right to concealed carry in Wisconsin.
