Ft Collins, CO –-(Ammoland.com)- Gun Competence:
I’ve grown weary of recent editorials frantically warning us all that allowing school teachers and administrations to carry concealed pistols in school will lead to a “rash of gun-accidents,” because “… ‘those people’ just can’t be trained to use guns competently.”
If that were the case, I suppose no one can be trained to use guns competently!
The tired, liberal refrain, “You’re too stupid to own a gun,” is being resurrected, this time targeting teachers as the one class of citizens who are so feeble-minded that they should never be allowed to even touch guns, much less actually carry them.
That same ridiculous prediction was made (by all the same people) at the beginning of the armed-pilots program, which has subsequently become a more-or-less complete success!
I remember having a discussion with Marine Corps brass, as I was promoting the concept of hot ranges on military bases, after having actually run several with their own troopers, of all ranks.
“But Mr Farnam, aren’t you worried about gun-accidents?”
My reply:
“Colonel, you’re having accidents now, even on your “cold” ranges! All the while, your troopers are not learning how to confidently carry loaded guns.”
When people own, store, and carry guns for serious purposes, there will be mishaps. With competent training, accidents can be greatly reduced, but never eliminated.
The complete and utter eradication of gun-accidents, like traffic-accidents, is an unrealistic goal!
Even within police departments, we have gun accidents. And, now and then an officer (sometimes even the chief) inadvertently leaves his pistol sitting on the toilet tank at his favorite restaurant!
When these mishaps occur, we take note, make corrections as necessary, re-mediate/discipline as necessary, and then drive on!
But in our deteriorating world, be you an LEO or not, you don’t ever want to be unarmed!
Particularly when you’re among professing liberals, you’ll be the only one there who isn’t armed! Liberals may not care about your life, but they care a great deal about their own!
Be you a LEO, pilot, soldier, Marine, teacher, school administrator, or just a plain-vanilla citizen, you better know and understand that when anyone saves your life, it will probably be you, because you will be the only one in a position to change the outcome.
Can “little-old you” be trained to own, store, carry, and use guns correctly and lawfully?
Never doubt it!
And, never believe self-righteous liberal hypocrites when they try to tell you you’re too stupid!

I believe it was Massad Ayoob who years ago stated that the job of police is people, not guns. This is as it should be. However, police should have enough training and monthly practice to be able to be competent and safe while carrying. The same is true for Joe Citizen. Get armed, get trained, carry daily.
First off, the world is actually becoming safer, or more exactly, it is being made and safer place by people like Mr. Farnam. Secondly, if teachers are too stupid to be trusted with guns, why do you trust them with your kids’ education and safety seven hours or so a day?
I am too stupid to confuse a jackass with a liberal and will “accidentally” shoot a liberal.

@2War, Yeah, when I think of all those teenagers, on the FEBA, shooting everything from a .38 to a TOW, I just chuckle. Then pride and admiration overcome me.
I sometimes shoot with LEOs , mostly pistol, and I find that it is mostly the Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Dept. that are better trained. The city officers rarely practice and are, in most part, not prepared for a lethal encounter.
If school teachers aren’t smart enough to carry a firearm then they aren’t smart enough to be teaching the next generation, point that out to any gun hating liberal who talks against the teachers being armed.

The teachers that I have seen in the news aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer. If that is the criteria for obtaining a CCW then we need to get rid of 95% of our teachers.
N.Y.P.D officers only qualify ONCE A YEAR. ARE THEY FULLY COMPETENT ???????? Just try to get a CCW in N.Y.C. Or Any where in N.Y. Good Luck
Regarding competence with a handgun, many police officers are not ‘gun people’. They only shoot their sidearm when required to by their department (which may be as little as once per year). A private citizen who trains regularly will often have more ‘competence’ their local LEO who only shoots when it is qualification time. The public is misled (again) by the media and our politicians into believing that all LEOs are fully competent and skilled in the use of their side arm. I saw that recently when I was talking to one of the guys that I know casually. When I started talking about gun builds and shooting in general, he got a funny look on his face and said that he only shoots when he has to for qualification purposes. It was very clear from his demeanor that he was not interested in shooting at all. I was a bit surprised because the other LEO I know, came to our place and enjoyed the hell out of blasting away at our makeshift range.
